Run, Hombre, Run

By Xose Tarrio Gonzalez

Xose Tarrio Gonzales was born into a poor working-class family in the Spanish port city of La Corunda.  Deprived of many oppurtunities, he drifted into a world of drugs and crime, and at age nineteen received his first adult prison sentence.  Shortly thereafter he received another, more serious sentence, that of living with HIV and AIDS. Due to additional punishments, Xose Tarrio would never be released from prison, and instead would spend the rest of his life fighting desperately to escape by any means necessary.  He belonged to a group of politicized prisoners who tried to take on the Spanish penal system through escapes, kidnappings, protests and riots, and who in turn suffered the brutal response of the state.  To combat the wave of unrest in the penal system, the notorious FIES 'prison within a prison' system was set up to contain this group of uncontrollables.

Smuggled out of solitary confinement, Huye, Hombre, Huye (Run, Man, Run), is a first hand account of one man's refusal to accept the legitimacy of the privileged to judge the less privileged, of a collective struggle against an inhumane system, and of the limitless depths that those in power will sink to when challenged.  It is a powerful story of an unbreakable spirit.
